2004 APSA Centenary Reunion

Friday 27th August, 2004 saw many “old” skaters come together to celebrate the Silver Anniversary of APSA National. It is also special year as it marks 100 years of ice skating in Australia.

APSA as many know originated in NSW in 1968. Other states formed their own associations however, it took until 1979 for us to amalgamate into one Association. Our inaugural president was Mr Bill Black who also presided over the formation of the NSW branch.

The night was a great success as it was held in conjunction with the Australian Championships thus allowing many interstate and overseas coaches, judges and visitors to attend. It was fascinating going through some of the old magazines and photos that were brought and great fun was had in recognising people from the past.

About 90 people attended, from all eras of skating, from the thirties to the present day. Unfortunately some of our regulars couldn’t join us but as this was such a success we will consider having another “Nostalgia Night” next time the Championships are held in Sydney.

It was exciting to see many of the original APSA committee; we have all aged a little!!! However our love of the sport has remained.

“Old” skaters came from all over. It was wonderful to see Patsy-Ann Jones and her husband Jim, who came all the way from Canada just for the celebrations. Former Olympic representative Alan Ganter came from Lismore and we were able to coax Gloria’s former pair skating and my dance partner Bobby Watson to attend. David Price who was our first treasurer came along and I’m pleased to say everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

My sincere thanks to Barbara and Doug Clarke who were the “behind the scenes” workers and helped make the night a terrific success.
